Is a seabird found in North America, ranging from Florida and Mexico and found as far north as Alaska.
They swim underwater, usually in large packs. The barb enables then to snag the fish as their beak clamps down.

The Cornell Lab video shows the cormorant as he dries his feathers. Their feathers are not waterproof so that they can swim underwater. After they have eaten they will climb onto something or possibly sit in the water with their wings extended to drain them so that they can more easily fly.
Here, sea gulls hang out with them and circle overhead as the pack goes fishing. The cormorants can swallow small fishes but have to surface to swallow larger ones. When they do, they rapidly swim away from other cormorants who will try to steal the fish and the sea gulls also will dive in and attack them in an attempt to steal the fish.
The cormorants only spend winters here and the sea gulls only show up when the cormorants are present. Click for more fishing photos. and more |
